Congratulations to the winning charities of Reliant Gives! Thanks for voting!
Operation Kindness is our $100,000 winner! Casa de Esperanza will receive $20,000, while $10,000 will go to Kids’ Meals. Thanks to everyone who voted. You made this holiday season especially bright for these deserving charities.
“We designed the Reliant Gives program as a way to empower employees and communities to help support organizations that are making a difference. Along the way, we realized we created a platform that allowed anyone from anywhere to get involved with communities across Texas with just one click. Congratulations to all of our heroes – the nonprofits, the employees and everyone who votes. We look forward to another round of the program later this year.”
– Elizabeth Killinger, President of Reliant and NRG Retail
More about the charities
Casa de Esperanza
Casa de Esperanza is a safe place for Houston’s children in crisis caused by abuse, neglect or the effects of HIV. The organization provides residential care, and coordinates medical and psychological services attuned to the needs of each child. Casa de Esperanza’s goal is to return physically and emotionally healthy children to stabilized homes where caregivers can safely provide daily services.
An award of $100,000 would allow Casa de Esperanza to serve even more children in the Houston area, recruit new volunteer foster parents and expand comprehensive services. Meeting the needs of children and families for 35 years, Casa de Esperanza charges no fees and does not receive government funding. The organization’s work is sustained through generous community support.
Kids' Meals delivers free, healthy meals year-round to the doorsteps of Houston’s hungriest preschool-aged children. Each weekday, the organization provides approximately 2,700 meals to children under age five, who are impacted by hunger and food insecurity. These children are at home during the day, yearning for food that parents often can’t provide, while their older siblings are fed at school.
Lunches are prepared and delivered by Kids’ Meals for a total cost of less than $2.00 a day per child. An award of $100,000 would go a long way toward feeding the more than 88,000 hungry preschoolers in Houston. Moreover, this kind of funding would help the organization preserve its vision of ending preschool hunger in Houston one and for all.
As the original and largest no-kill shelter in North Texas, Operation Kindness serves daily as the “go-to” facility for Texas municipal and rescue partners who run out of space or have animals in need of medical services. Texans rely on us to prevent euthanasia and to save and find homes for thousands of homeless cats and dogs each year.
Every animal that arrives at Operation Kindness receives medical care, which ranges from routine to advanced. Care takes the form of life-saving medicines, therapies, surgeries, behavior training, birthing care and adoption. If quality of life can be preserved, any condition is treated. An award of $100,000 would mean the difference between life and euthanasia for many thousands of homeless animals.
