“Giving back” is an important piece of what Reliant stands for as a company.
Every year Reliant employees get involved in the Reliant Gives program because we’ve made it our mission to help “charitable giving” become a contagious act in Texas. Through nominations by Reliant employees and votes from the public at large, these organizations have a chance at winning our support. Read more about the following organizations below to understand why they’ve made it to the top three positions.
“We designed the Reliant Gives program as a way to empower employees and communities to help support organizations that are making a difference. Along the way, we realized we created a platform that allowed anyone from anywhere to get involved with communities across Texas with just one click. Congratulations to all of our heroes – the nonprofits, the employees and everyone who votes. We look forward to another round of the program later this year.”
– Elizabeth Killinger, President of Reliant and NRG Retail
More about the charities
A 2nd Cup
A 2nd Cup is a non-profit coffee shop dedicated to putting an end to human trafficking. The shop has created a space for awareness, conversation and empowerment. They invest in after-care programs for survivors of human trafficking and collaborate with other anti-trafficking organizations to further their efforts.
One of the biggest hurdles for survivors of human trafficking is finding viable employment. Being awarded $100k will enable A 2nd Cup to launch a coffee and culinary work program for survivors—providing soft skills, from resume writing and interview techniques to customer service and financial trainings; as well as specific barista, roasting, and/or culinary skills to rebuild their lives and support themselves through meaningful employment.
Girlstart increases girls’ interest and engagement in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through innovative education programs. Girlstart programs build the fundamental skills and knowledge in STEM — as well as confidence and interest in these subjects — that girls will need in order to be successful in STEM courses, activities, majors, and careers.
Girlstart reaches over 16,500 girls and community members annually and has expanded year-round programming beyond Central Texas to include the Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth communities. If awarded $100k, more than 600 girls could participate on full scholarship in 4 Girlstart Summer Camps and 20 Girlstart after school programs in Houston in 2017.
Southwest Transplant Alliance
Southwest Transplant Alliance (STA) saves and improves lives by serving as the bridge between those who make the generous decision to donate their organs and tissue, and those needing a lifesaving transplant throughout much of Texas. Their purpose is to save lives through organ and tissue donation and transplantation, while offering hope to those facing the devastating loss of a loved one. They recently added the recovery of tissue to their services.
Toward that end, STA needed to purchase vans to transport their tissue teams throughout the state and beyond. If they are fortunate enough to be awarded the $100,000, they will use the money to offset the cost of these vans. This will allow STA to recover more organs and tissue for transplant.
